The Miss America Competition will air on Thursday, December 19 at 8 PM EST (5 PM PST) on NBC. In order to live stream the event, you’ll have to sign in with your TV provider. Furthermore, you’ll need a VPN to watch Miss America abroad (outside the US). The reason for this is that NBC content (including its live streams) is geo-blocked and only available in the US.
Please note that we’ll only be recommending official sources for watching the Miss America Competition. While there will likely be unlicensed streams, expect these to offer poor video quality. Low-resolution video and excessively amounts of lag and buffering are common. Worse still, unofficial sources can also be taken offline for copyright violation, leaving you without a live stream of the event.
NBC content is region-locked and only available in the US. As such, you’ll need to use a VPN in order to watch the Miss America Competition abroad.
How to live stream Miss America online with a VPN
By using a VPN, you can change your IP address and make it look like you’re browsing from another location. This tricks region-locked services into letting you use them abroad. The good news is that this isn’t complicated at all. Here’s what you’ll need to do:
- First, sign up with a VPN that can unblock NBC. We recommend ExpressVPN although CyberGhost and NordVPN are two great value alternatives.
- Next, download and install the appropriate VPN app or browser extension for the device you’d like to use to live stream Miss America 2020.
- Log in to your VPN and connect to a server in the US. This will provide you with a US IP address and allow you to unblock NBC abroad.
- Go to NBC and sign in with your cable TV provider (you’ll need to enter your email address or username and password).
- Finally, select an NBC live stream which should load and play without restriction. If the content is still blocked, try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
It’s worth checking your VPN works with NBC in advance of the Miss America 2020 competition. You’ll then have enough time to contact your VPN’s customer support if there are any unexpected technical issues.

What should I know about the Miss America Competition?
Miss America 2020 will be the 93rd Miss America competition. While usually held at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the 2020 competition will take place at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut. It’s open to women from the US between the ages of 17 and 25. There are 51 entrants in total, 50 of which represent the 50 US states with the other candidate coming from the District of Columbia, USA.
The winner of Miss America 2020 will be crowned by Nia Franklin, winner of Miss America 2019. In terms of Miss America’s job, the winner becomes a full-time employee of the Miss America Organization. She travels extensively throughout the US for a full year, promoting the program while raising awareness of her own social impact initiative.
In 2018, the competition adopted a new format known as “Miss America 2.0”. Under the new format, candidates are no longer judged on their physical appearance. One of the major changes involved the scrapping of the swimsuit competition. Instead, there is more of a focus on the talents and ideas of competitors. Gretchen Carlson, former Miss America Chairwoman said, “We are moving it forward and evolving it in this cultural revolution”.
How is the Miss America Competition scored?
Miss America 2020 will see the introduction of the new competition format. The preliminary competition will involve private interviews with judges (20% of preliminary score), an on-stage interview (15%), talent competition (50%), and “social impact pitch” (15%).
The 15 highest scoring candidates then progress to the final where they compete in an on-stage interview (25%), perform in a talent competition (30%), and present their “social impact pitch” (20%), with the remaining 25% made up of their score from the preliminaries.
